Riding into the wind

I was able to fit in a 40-mile road bike ride a few days ago with one of my best friends.  I wasn’t used to the steady headwinds of South Florida and I have to admit that I felt challenged and pushed.  But my friend and I were able to read each other’s minds as we worked together on the ride.

Drafting behind another rider can actually drop your heart rate by about 15 beats/minute.  That has a big impact on how far and fast you can go.  Working together, a pair of riders can actually raise their average speed.

Likewise, being in the lead actually feels like you’re pulling the person behind you as you take the full brunt of the wind.

Leading in life can be a lot like that.  Having someone to share burdens allows you to stay refreshed and gives you the energy to keep going.

” A man of many companions may come to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”  Proverbs 18:24

I would encourage you to keep your close relationships strong.  Find people around you who are like-minded and understand you so that together, life’s issues become easier to get through.

To my friend, who is more than a brother to me –  the ride was priceless.  Thanks.
