Got Superpowers?

I loved super-heros growing up.  Batman was my favorite even though he didn’t have any real superpowers.  Or did he?

I just watched a rerun of an old Batman show from 1967 (year I was born) that starred Adam West and that really cool Batmobile.  Wow! It was really bad.  When I was a kid, that was the coolest show.  Now, it’s just embarrassing to watch.

Other super-heros had superpowers that could save the day and make bad people go away.  I always wanted the superpower of being able to stare at something real hard and make it blow up, like my 2nd grade teacher (she had really bad issues).  I’ve since asked for forgiveness for that prayer.

Today, I’ve realized that I do have some superpowers.  You know those Entenmann’s chocolate doughnuts? I can make a whole box of those disappear.  I can also endure long periods of awkward silence in a room with others and remain perfectly calm.

But seriously, if you call yourself a Christ-follower, you DO have superpowers!  Jesus said that there is a transformation that happens to us that makes us very special in God’s eyes.

Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.

John 7: 37-39

Life-giving, encouraging, powerful.  That’s what a believer’s superpower is…  that’s what the Spirit of God is in our lives.  Paul writes about this in Romans 8

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Romans 8:11

I’m so glad I don’t have to dress like the old Batman to go into action.  God is moving in people’s lives and we are called to be available for God to use us.

I’d still like to be able to blow things up by staring at them, though.
