The Highest Bidder

I’m not sure what this says about me, but last week was the first time I purchased something on eBay.  We live in a world that places bids on items to give them value.  Some sellers set values low and bet on the fact that a low price will draw a flurry of bidding.  Others set a high price up front, not wanting to take the chance of having to sell something for too low of a price.

You can find a list of the most sought after items on eBay to find out what our culture holds in high esteem.  Here’s a recent list of the top ten things people were looking for on eBay:

  1. Apple iPad
  2. Vera Bradley Handbags
  3. Xbox 360
  4. Blackberry Storm
  5. Laptops
  6. Men’s Fossil Watches
  7. Apple iPod touch
  8. Golf Clubs
  9. Juicy Couture
  10. Garmin nuvi GPS

Some of these aren’t a surprise.  I have no idea what item 9 is… and I’m afraid to Google it.  I’m happy for Vera.  No idea who she is, but apparently she’s done a great job of branding herself.  As for the iPad, I’ll probably hold out for the smaller one that’s rumored to be coming.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we were in a habit of out-bidding each other in building up the value of others?  It would be great if we continually were adding higher and higher value to people through our words and actions.

Jesus has put the highest value on all of us.  In Matthew 13:45-46, He gave us a picture of our worth:

Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls.  When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!

Jesus paid a high price for us.  He’s outbid everyone.  We need to remember that even when this world doesn’t value us, we already have a heavenly value that causes angels to rejoice when we accept God’s gift of relationship with Him (John 15:10).

As for that thing I bought on eBay, I just sold it on eBay.  Didn’t need it.  How much did I make after shipping costs?  $1.

  1. LOL…the Vera Bradley plant is about 5 miles from my house. The company makes purses and other pretty things for women. Around here, they have annual sales where you can snatch them up for pretty cheap. Juicy Couture is a perfume… you don’t need to worry. I just got such a kick out of the Vera remark since it’s made around here. And thanks for the reminder that Jesus outbid everyone for us and that we are worth A LOT! Have a good day!
