The magical golden calf

Reading through the Bible – Day 22 of 1oo.  Exodus 32 – 34

Something really funny hit me in this morning’s reading.  Exodus 32 – 34 covers the story of God giving the 1o commandments to Moses on a mountain while Aaron is at the bottom of the mountain with the Israelites worshipping a golden calf.

Aaron, of all people, comes up with one of the most bizarre stories of why they got back into idol worship when they should’ve been waiting on God.  Here’s Ex 32:22-24

“Do not be angry, my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil.  They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’

So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!

Amazing!  The magical golden calf that just “came out” of the fire.  Earlier, in verse 4, it says that Aaron made the calf with a tool.  I wonder if Moses almost laughed because of how stupid Aaron must have sounded.

We play things down like this all the time in life to make things “not so bad”.  We can’t make excuses like this.  When we mess up, we just need to fess up.
