Just Exhale! Part 1

In one week, I’ll be diving into a lake with a couple hundred other people to start my first Triathlon of the 2010 season.  This group will include a bunch really fit and bronzed athletes.  And then there’s me.

The swim is the biggest challenge for me.  I had to learn how to swim last Summer in order to do my first triathlon.  I still do a pretty good imitation of a cat being thrown into a pool.

One thing I learned while reading the book:  The Lance Armstrong Performance Program, was to remember to breathe out.  I know, that sounds stupid.  I actually forget to breathe when I’m worried about silly things like being eaten by a shark or being stung by a jellyfish.

Lance writes that when you concentrate on breathing out, you don’t even have to think about breathing in – it just happens (as long as your face isn’t in the water).  So I tried it, and he’s right.

So, whether I’m swimming, biking or running, the top thing on my mental checklist is to exhale.

I’m really looking forward to remembering a bunch of other things this time that might make things easier for me:

  1. Starting my stopwatch before I jump into the water
  2. Actually consuming the GU energy gel packs that I have in my back pockets during the event.  Last year I forgot about them.
  3. Making sure my bike computer is reset before I start my ride
  4. Not allowing anyone pushing a stroller to pass me on the run!
